Harry Potter is the invention of British author, J.K. Rowling.  She has written a fantastic series of seven fantasy novels about the adventures of a young wizard, Harry Potter, together with friends, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger who are students at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.  The story centers on young Harry’s struggle against the evil wizard, Lord Voldemort, who murdered Harry’s parents in order to conquer the wizarding world and to rule non-magical people (Muggle).  Each book covers one year in Harry’s life at Hogwarts as he learns to overcome many magical and emotional hurdles.

Even though these books are aimed at children, many adults have found the adventures of this young wizard and his friends equally absorbing.  Throughout the series of books we are introduced to fantastic characters both good and evil, as well as the fictional sport of Quidditch.

Let’s take a look at the books…

In the first book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, tells the story of how as a baby, Harry was attacked by Lord Voldemort who killed his parents.  He was taken by Hagrid, half-giant keeper of keys and grounds and later teacher, to live with his Muggle aunt and uncle.  When he was eleven years old, with Hagrid’s help, Harry prepares for and starts his first year of Hogwarts, together with Ron and Hermione. He again encounters Lord Voldemort who yearns to gain the power of the Philosopher’s stone in his quest for immortality.

In the second book, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry, Ron and Hermione start their second year at Hogwarts. The story revolves around the history of Hogwarts and the 50 year old mystery of the Chamber of Secrets, an underground lair of ancient evil.

The third book, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, follows Harry’s third year at Hogwarts.  This is where an escaped prisoner, Sirius Black, believed to have helped Voldemort murder his parents, has escaped Azkaban prison and is after Harry. We are also introduced to the Dementors, foul beasts who guard Azkaban.

In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry’s fourth year finds him unwillingly taking part in the Triwizard Tournament, a dangerous contest between three schools of magic.  He tries to unravel the mystery of who forced him into the competition and why.  The novel ends with the reappearance of Voldemort and the death of a student.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix finds Harry starting his fifth year by being attacked by the Dementors and having to confront Voldemort.  He also faces exams, changes in the Gryffindor quidditch line up, vivid dreams and increasing pain in his lightening shaped scar.  A hard year it seems!

In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Harry’s sixth year finds him facing treacherous tasks in order to defeat his evil nemesis, Lord Voldemort.  He finds a booked marked “This book is the property of the Half Blood Prince” which helps him excel at potions class and teach him a few dangerous ones as well.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is about Harry’s final year at Hogwarts, Voldermort trying to prevent him from attending and the long adventure to finally destroy Voldemort once and for all.

If you love the books then you’ll love the films.  Each of the books has been made into a movie and the remaining novel, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, is due to be released as a movie in two parts in 2010 and 2011.
